Another Great Year as a Top Rated Professional on Upwork

I was checking my e-mail tonight, like every night I do before I go to bed. There were several emails I deleted. Just do not want to read them.

Then one e-mail got my attention. It was from Upwork, thanking me for another successful year as a top rated professional on Upwork.

I opened the mail and the e-mail as follows:

Another Great Year as a Top Rated Professional on Upwork 1

Well, that was pretty awesome. I made another year in the top row.

Those if you do not know Upwork has introduced the top rated category last year where you will be listed if you have a great success ratio (90% and up) for completing jobs successfully and you have earned more than $1000 in the last 12 months.

There are some other criteria for the top rated freelancer, stated bellow in this post.

  • A current Job Success Score of 90% or higher
  • Maintained Rising Talent status or a Job Success Score of at least 90% for at least 13 of the last 16 weeks
  • A 100% complete profile  (90% for those who brought their profiles over from Elance)
  • 12-month earnings of at least $1,000
  • Up-to-date availability (if unavailable now, set a date estimate)
  • An account in good standing with no recent account holds
  • Activity on the platform (proposal, accepted invitation, or earnings) in the past 90 days

So, how does it help?

oDesk and Elance merged together and formed Upwork. They have introduced some great features till then. Some of them were good and some of them are not.

The top rated badge on your profile certainly helps you, but not actively. You are invited to some cool jobs or get regular e-mails about opportunities for new jobs, but you are not going to earn better for this. It’s prestigious, but not going to help you winning a job or increase your earnings.

Sad, but true on many level.

I have been working a freelancer for more than 7 years now and oDesk was my first place to win a job and earn some good cash. I faced many interviews and did finish many quality projects there.

The place has changed since then. Now getting a new job is not easy for you. New people are restricted to get in the market now. There were lot of spam profile making and spam job posting too.

the earnings from Upwork has gone low even for top rated freelancers like me.

Why this happened?

As I said, there are a lot of people registering on the site, most of them even do not know how to apply for a job. Hampering the quality of existing freelancer’s job applications.

So, they choked the registration process for many categories.

But, the overall income for me from Upwork has gone low. The market is already flooded with low-cost workers.

Top Rated freelancers like me are now forced to leave the market or place lower bid.

Suddenly everyone is an Online Freelancer now.

I know this is not the situation for everyone on the market place. But, the overall quality for getting jobs are decreasing day by day.

Another reason to hate the situation is for the pricing change they did. If you are an old freelancer on Upwork you might remember the 10% fee we used to get, now it has changed.

But, there is a catch, if you can bring your own client then you can get a 100% weaver of the fee.

I am with marketing and I know this is a marketing strategy where you bring your own client. But, I do not know how many of them will bring new clients to the platform. Nobody want’s to lose their contact if they have a good arrangement already. Now from the clients perspective the fee structure is:

This is also pretty much good if you are willing to work with Upwork for a long time. From the above changes it is clear that the company is trying to save their future on online freelancing business.

The system has gone better than the previous years and I admit that the payment system, security and update everything is better now.

But, the earning of freelancers like me has gone down by a great amount.

Now, it’s time to decide, whether I am going to stay with them or not.
